A local Croydon primary school, situated on the heart of Oakley Road, is celebrating this week after scooping a top award from an independent company for safety excellence.

Oasis Academy Ryelands has been recognised by the National Safety Certification Scheme for schools, known as SafetyMARK, as having ‘excellent’ safety standards.

Oasis Academy Ryelands have established a robust health and safety system and culture that is amongst the best in the country

The SafetyMARK scheme aims to provide guidance for schools and to recognise and reward those schools that have gone the extra mile to create a safe environment for staff, pupils, visitors and contractors. After a rigorous independent audit the school was able to demonstrate that it has first class levels of safety management and compliance and, in doing so, achieved the SafetyMARK award for excellence.

In the report, addressed to Deputy Principal, Natalie French it reads; ‘Oasis Academy Ryelands has a high level of health and safety awareness and good systems in place with reliable support from Oasis Community Learning and Property and Estates. The Deputy Principal, Natalie French, is the lead/champion for health and safety at the school and has received IOSH training and has good knowledge of Health and Safety legislation.’

Glenn Lillo, Principal at Oasis Academy Ryelands, commented on the certification, saying; “We are thrilled to be recognised with the SafetyMARK award. We take the safety of our staff and pupils extremely seriously and it’s wonderful to have this recognition for all of our efforts to make our school such a safe place to work and study.”

“Having achieved the SafetyMARK award, we can demonstrate our on-going commitment to maintaining excellence in the management of health and safety within our school”.

The report also highlighted the high percentage score that the academy gained; ‘The overall SafetyMARK audit score for Oasis Academy Ryelands was 87%. Therefore, the SafetyMARK award of excellence has been obtained, for which the school is to be commended.’

Justin Smith, from SafetyMARK, added; “Oasis Academy Ryelands has a really positive attitude with regard to health and safety and it is clear to see that safety is taken extremely seriously and that it is very well managed. The staff have established a robust health and safety system and culture that is amongst the best in the country and we are delighted to recognise that fact with this prestigious award”.

The audit which is carried out on the school was rigorous and very detailed. SafetyMARK examine documented policies, systems and procedures and also the way that activities are carried out in practice.
